 We have just started a new home renovation project in Portmarnock. In a series of posts, we will show you the ‘behind the scenes’ of how we run a project from start to finish. B&G Construction’s Commercial Director, Marcus Fitzmaurice, recently sat down with home owner, John Quigley, to discuss the project plan for his family’s new home. Original Layout and Project Plan The original property is a 1970s, 3 bedroom, semi-detached property, with a side garage. The room layout was typical of the Portmarnock area, with a front and rear living room, a back kitchen, two main bedrooms upstairs, a box room at the front and a small bathroom. “The whole footprint of the house is 100 square metres,” said John, “this layout would not have worked for us as a family of 3 young kids who are already demanding more of their own personal space.” After a lot of thought, the homeowners decided on their must-haves for a new design: more space and better energy efficiency. John added that “it would be nice to have a quirky design as well.”

 We are excited to have worked with Darragh Lynch of Darragh Lynch Architects, on 7 The Mall, a new build in Malahide. The client, Ronan Colleran, had never undertaken a project of this size before. Colleran had seen B&G Construction’s previous projects around the Malahide area, and had heard several good comments about working with us. “I had a vision for our forever family home, so I wanted to ensure there would be an open and honest conversation between the builders and me,” said Colleran. 7 The Mall is a new, 1,400 sq.ft. build, with three bedrooms and three bathrooms, complete with an open-plan kitchen and living space.
 B&G Construction’s Project Director, Bernard Fitzmaurice, started out his career in the construction industry as a carpenter and has progressed up the ladder to his current role of Project Director.
Bernard’s key attributes are his attention to detail, his ability to foresee the finished project long before the final stage, and the way he always makes sure the process is done correctly. In his role as Project Director, his main priority is to make sure that everything runs smoothly, on time and according to plan, while keeping the highest standard of workmanship on each site daily. “I am focused on the impact that the design will have on the client,” says Lynch, “and B&G delivers great service to my clients.”-- Darragh Lynch  Malahide-based architect and business owner Darragh Lynch has one focus— his clients. Lynch’s practice, primarily focused on housing, refurbishment extensions and upgrades, is centred around the impact that design can have on a client’s space. Darragh has worked on multiple projects with B&G, and recently sat down to reflect on his process. “We work very hard in the design phase to try to get that right, and I think that's probably the biggest value that we add,” said Lynch.
Lynch began working with B&G Construction when he started his practice nine years ago, and has kept them on ever since. “I really love working with these guys, they’re just a pleasure to deal with and keep things honest.” Over the years, Lynch has gotten to know the team’s strengths through many projects, “Richard is great on the tender side, Marcus is smart on the money side of things, and Bernard is a pleasure to deal with on site,” said Lynch, “It’s not that there are no problems, but when there are problems they are always solution focused.”  In partnership with Aughney O’Flaherty Architects and Michael Dalton Quantity Surveyors, we are currently halfway through this complete beach house renovation and extension project in Portmarnock.
Originally built as a beach house, this property is being transformed into a highly energy-efficient family home and private gym. This has been a very interesting renovation project to work on, especially due to the bespoke shapes that were required for the roof. We worked hard to get the details just right and we are very pleased with the result.  We are very excited to be working with the following design team on this complete house renovation and extension project in Malahide: Fred Wilson and Jonny Kilfeather of Adrian Hill Architects, Bryan Wallace of MTW Partnership Consultant Engineers, and Eoin Darby of Darby and Associates Quantity Surveyors.
Originally a 1,750 square foot 1960’s bungalow, where all the rooms were on just one floor, it is being converted into a large, 1.5 storey, 2,400 square foot modern, dormer-style bungalow. What’s been interesting about this home renovation project is its clever design. By adding the dormer in the roof, it has allowed for two extra large bedrooms, with ensuites, while the rooms on the ground floor now have a more spacious feel, with an open, flowing design throughout.  B&G Construction’s Construction Director, Gary De Loughry, a carpenter by trade, brings with him a wealth of experience in the construction industry to B&G.
Gary’s area of expertise is in on-site management, making sure that everything runs smoothly so that we can deliver on time and on budget. A motivator for Gary is the satisfaction of a successfully completed project and delivering on that wow factor for our clients.  B&G Construction’s Commercial Director, Marcus Fitzmaurice joined the company full-time in 2020, having gained many years of experience in the construction industry and becoming a chartered Quantity Surveyor.
Marcus’ area of expertise is in cost control, tendering and programming. He is responsible for planning out all B&G projects from start to finish, making sure that we deliver on time and on budget. Marcus enjoys working closely with partners and clients and is on site every week to ensure that any issues are rectified quickly and that each project runs as smoothly as possible.  B&G Construction’s Managing Director, Richard Fitzmaurice founded the company in 2006, along with Construction Director, Gary DeLoughry and Project Director, Bernard Fitzmaurice.
A carpenter by trade, Richard’s highly skilled craftsmanship informs every aspect of our work at B&G Construction. His attention to detail and vision has seen the company grow exponentially. Thanks to his hard work, we have built a reputation as one of Dublin’s premium construction partners, with a team of 18 tradesmen that specialises in high-end private homes renovations and commercial fit outs. Always keen to upskill, Richard recently completed a course in the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) Chartered Membership Programme and is currently working towards his member (MCIOB) grade. The CIOB is a highly influential professional body for construction management and leadership; gaining this membership will be recognition of Richard’s top-notch abilities, knowledge and experience in the industry.
